RAF’s Ten Year Anniversary with “A Cocktail with a Queen – Gawhar Shad of Herat”, May 13, 2013 : On Monday, May 13th, the Rebuilding Afghanistan Foundation (RAF), a non-profit organization entirely staffed by volunteers from New York’s business and philanthropic communities, celebrated RAF’s Ten Year Anniversary with “A Cocktail with a Queen – Gawhar Shad of Herat.” The event’s highlight was a fashion show featuring the tailored and magnificent pieces of Zarif Designs by designer Zolaykha Sherzad. Zarif Designs are worn by the likes of Kate Hudson, Duchess Camilla of Cornwall, and Queen Farah Pahlavi of Iran. Other highlights included stunning raffle prizes from Buccellati Blossoms; Manhattan’s preeminent salon, Garren New York and Modo Eyeware. RAF is a U.S.-based 501(c)3 founded in 2003 and co-directed by Alisa Tugberk and Elizabeth Hartnett. RAF brings education to Afghan children by raising money in the private sector to fund US-registered charities building schools and developing educational programs in Afghanistan. RAF’s Ten Year Anniversary with “A Cocktail with a Queen – Gawhar Shad of Herat”, May 13, 2013

208th New England Society's Founders' Day Celebration, May 13, 2013 : On Monday, May 13, the New England Society in the City of New York (NES) honored its long, distinguished history and raised funds to support its philanthropic programs at its 208th Founders’ Day Celebration. Judith A. Bliss, Stephen Storen, Sara Hunter Hudson and Ron Gold co-chaired the cocktail dance at the Racquet and Tennis Club on Park Avenue. The evening featured music by the Alex Donner Orchestra, and attendees enjoyed a raw bar, carving stations and hors d’oeuvres in between spins on the dance floor. NES was founded in 1805 when Thomas Jefferson was President of the U.S. and the population of New York was 75,770. The Society held its first official gathering on May 6, 1805, at the City Hotel. Early philanthropic activities varied, such as distributing firewood to needy New England families in New York. Today, the Society’s charitable programs focus on education and historic preservation. The NES Scholarship Program helps to fund New York City students at New England colleges and universities. The Central Park Monument Fund helps to preserve the Park’s historic statues and monuments, including the bronze sculpture of The Pilgrim located at East 72nd Street, which NES commissioned and donated in 1885. Many prominent New Yorkers served as President of NES, from William Evarts (founder and president of the New York Bar Association) and JP Morgan (financier, art collector and philanthropist) to Seth Low (Mayor of New York and president of Columbia University). Ann Nitze Luncheon, May 9, 2013 : The sun came out on Thursday, May 9th to greet the guests for Ann Nitze’s terrace lunch. The purple and white wisteria were in full bloom and the champagne flowed. Museum directors and art collectors were in New York for the auctions and fairs. Friends came from Mumbai, London, Tokyo, Vienna, San Francisco, Miami, and Santa Fe to catch up with old friends in New York. Ann Nitze, a fan of the Royal Academy in London was particularly happy to greet the director Christopher LeBrun. The RA had recently exhibited the work of Mariko Mori another guest at the lunch.

The New York Women Foundation's 26th Annual Women's Breakfast, May 9, 2013 : On Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 7:30 AM the New York Women’s Foundation® (NYWF) held its 26th annual Celebrating Women® Breakfast, honoring Rachel Lloyd, Founder and CEO of GEMS (Girls Educational & Mentoring Services), Tina Brown, Founder and Editor in Chief of The Newsweek Daily Beast Company, and Nobel Peace Laureate and Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, at the New York Marriott Marquis. NYWF honored Rachel Lloyd with the Celebrating Women® Award, which was given in recognition of her significant achievements that have made her a role model for women and girls. Tina Brown was presented with the Vision Award in recognition of her significant philanthropic contributions to women and children, and Leymah Gbowee was honored with the Century Award for her social activism which has had an extraordinary and lasting impact on the lives of many. The event’s co-chairs and Board Members were Anita Channapati, Kwanza R. Butler, and Jennifer Giacobbe. The breakfast kicked off with a performance from Mariachi Flor de Toloache—New York City’s “only all-female mariachi band”—who roused the crowd before Diana Taylor, Chair of the NYWF Board of Directors, addressed the sold-out audience of some 2,200 attendees. Ms. Taylor was quick to thank the 90 partner organizations seated behind her onstage, before noting that the New York Women’s Foundation has grown to become one of the top three women’s funds in the world. Jennifer Buffett, a past honoree and President of the NoVo Foundation, whose activism works to end the abuse and exploitation of women and girls, was next on stage to introduce Rachel Lloyd, the recipient of the Celebrating Women Award. Ms. Lloyd, who was instrumental in the passage of New York’s Safe Harbor Act—a law prohibiting the criminal persecution of minors who are victims of commercial sex trafficking. A former victim herself, Lloyd established GEMS, now the nation’s largest organization offering direct services to domestic victims of commercial sex trafficking. Following Ms. Lloyd was Tina Brown, the Founder & Editor In Chief of the Newsweek Daily Beast and Founder of the Women in the World Foundation, who received the Vision Award for her significant philanthropic contributions to women and children around the world. Betty Terrell-Cruz, a NYWF Founder and Board Alumna, then introduced grantee Yenny Quispe, a young Peruvian-American with a truly inspiring backstory who at an early age became an activist for immigrants’ rights. The second grantee honored, Ruth Moore, a victim of military sexual assault, has fought to help other survivors of military sexual assault secure their veterans benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. President Barack Obama recently signed the Ruth Moore Act of 2013, pledging to continue improving health care for veterans and expanding opportunities for women in combat roles. Ginny Day, a NYWF Founder and Board Alumna, and Yvonne Moore, NYWF Board of Directors Secretary, then took the stage to solicit donations from the audience. Ms. Moore announced that a group of current and past members of NYWF had pledged to match all donations up to $500,000. The final honoree of the day was Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee. Ms. Gbowee was introduced by Abigail Disney, Honorary Chair of the NYWF Board of Directors. Ms. Disney recalled the history of their relationship and the close bond between the two. Leymah Gbowee began by thanking Ms. Disney, who helped produce the award winning documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell, saying “this probably never would have happened without you bringing my story to the world.” Ms. Gbowee was funny and engaging while recalling her past and what inspired her to become a peace activist, whose efforts helped end the Second Liberian Civil War. She ended the morning on a high note, dancing with Ana Oliveira to John Legend’s rendition of “Wake Up Everybody” and getting the audience to their feet dancing along. The New York Women’s Foundation® is a cross-cultural alliance of women, serving as a voice for women and a force for change. The Foundation identifies innovative organizations that are effecting change for women in the communities they serve. Fink, chairman and CEO, BlackRock, Inc. and co-chair, Board of Trustees, NYU Langone, were honored for their tireless dedication to the growth of the medical center. Polyphony Private Concert, May 7, 2013 : On Tuesday May 7, the Board of The Polyphony Foundation hosted a private reception and recital at the Park Avenue home of Deborah and Craig Cogut. The evening featured remarkable musical performances by students of The Polyphony Foundation. Polyphony's mission is to support programs that bridge the social and cultural divide in Israel through the unique power of classical music. The Foundation's music education programs and seminars bring Arab and Jewish students together, thereby transforming their (and their families') lives. Polyphony was founded by the Coguts together with Nabeel Abboud Ashkar, a world renowned violinist and master teacher based in Nazareth. Mr. Ashkar was recently awarded the John and Yoko Lennon Courage in the Arts Award by Yoko Ono for his work with Polyphony. The evening's performance began with two eleven year old musicians, David Margalit, a pianist from Tel Aviv, and Nasif Francis, a violinist from Nazareth. Hagit Bar Sella, an 18 year old cellist from Kibbutz Har Duf and Yamen Saadi, a 16 year old violinist from Nazareth, next performed Hayden's Piano Trio No. 39 in G major. They were accompanied by longtime Polyphony instructor and pianist, Ron Trachtman. Out of his inspiring dedication to Polyphony's mission and his students , Mr. Trachtman has been making the 4 hour round trip from his home in Tel Aviv to Nazareth to teach for the past 7 years. The program continued with Mr. Saadi's performance of an untitled violin solo piece by Israeli composer Menachem Zur. Mr. Saadi won the prestigious Paul Ben Haim music competition for his performance of this piece at the competition last year. Saint-Saens' Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso performed by Mr. Saadi and Mr. Trachtman concluded the performances. A lively discussion amongst the audience, Polyphony musician and Polyphony's three co-founders followed. Mr. Ashkar and Mr. Cogut described The Foundation's efforts to expand general music appreciation and education in public schools throughout Israel, the power of its "Explained Concert" series to understand the language of music and Polyphony's rigorous training program for select students who compete in some of the most prestigious events in Europe and Israel. Mr. Cogut told the group that several of Polyphony 's students are coming to the U.S. this fall to begin study at American colleges and music conservatories to pursue further a performing arts career. The audience also learned of Polyphony's creation of and performances by The Chamber Orchestra of the Galilee led by world renowned pianist Saleem Abboud Ashkar, currently based in Berlin. Young musicians from all over Israel. including several Polyphony musicians. are now members of this new Galilee orchestra. Stephanie Stoke's "Elegant Rooms that Work" Book Party, May 2, 2013 : Marie Eugenia and Bill Haseltine gave a book launch party for Stephanie Stokes’ Elegant Rooms That Work, Fantasy & Function in Interior Design. Rizzoli published the book, Xavier Guerrand-Hermès wrote the adorable forward. Friends from all over the world attended including Edouard Guerrand-Hermès from Paris, Muna Rihani Al-Nasser from Quatar, Malu Edwards form Chile, Keiko Nishida, wife of the Japanese Ambassador to the UN, Patricia Arias, wife of the Spanish Ambassador to the UN, and others. Among others attending were Carolyne Roehm and Katherine Bryan, Boulie and Jim Marlas, Konrad Keessee, Ann Nitze, and Margo Langenberg, the Kopelmans, Patty Tang and Jeanne Lawrence, and Sachiko Goodman and Nina Richter, whose Walnut library in Bronxville is featured in the book. They created this evening to introduce their generation to the joys of collecting. So, in addition to mixing and mingling, they can visit the individual booths, where the dealers give a brief talk about their particular specialty. The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s Junior Board's 4th Annual Evening at City Bakery, April 30, 2113 : On Tuesday, April 30th, The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s (OCRF) Junior Board celebrated its 4th annual Evening at City Bakery, from 8-11pm, with dinner, drinks, hot chocolate and a fabulous silent auction to benefit OCRF. The event is part of the OCRF Junior Board’s annual campaign to increase public awareness of the symptoms and early detection challenges of ovarian cancer, a disease that affects approximately 22,000 American women annually. Because there is no early detection test and symptoms are vague, ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed in advanced stages, and only 45% percent of patients survive more than 5 years. The five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer has increased by only 8% in the last 30 years. Now more than ever, scientific research to find more effective diagnostics, treatments, and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer is needed. The OCRF Junior Board’s efforts are specifically focused on expanding awareness of OCRF and its mission to younger members of the community and supporting events that will raise much-needed funds for the cause.

Strokes of Genius, April 25, 2013 : On Thursday, April 25th Strokes of Genius celebrated their 3rd Annual International Savant Art Exhibition at 100 United Nations Plaza. The evening hosted an extraordinary art exhibition of savant artists from around the world. Several acclaimed national artist works were included as well as a show case of local emerging student works. The evening was very inspirational for young artists as they viewed their artworks alongside greats such as Donna Williams, Temple Grandin, Ping Lian Yeak, Stephen Wiltshire, Christophe Pillault, Richard Wawro and Leland Lee. A favorite of the evening was 9 year old artist Delwin Cheah from Malaysia whose young age and extreme talent prompted much conversation. Lotos Club Spring Fling, April 24th 2013 : From six o’clock on, guests moved through various rooms of the Lotus Club to see a demonstration of the art of decorating Ukrainian Easter eggs, heard the ancient koto of Japan, watched classical Indian dance and an English maypole folk ritual, all the while tasting the traditional foods and drinks of the regions: blini and vodka, sushi and saki, samosas and Indian beer, meat pies and stout. At seven o’clock, they gathered in the Ballroom for a festive dinner - with a spring menu, in the midst of parasols and blossoms - and witnessed more revelations of this most extravagant season. The distinguished flutist, Carol Wincenc, played Debussy’s exquisite tribute to the god Pan. The award winning actors, Kathleen Chalfant and John Cunningham, read eloquent and whimsical poetry inspired by spring. Dr. Fernando Nottebohm of Rockefeller University spoke on the remarkable phenomenon of the growth of brain cells in song birds as they sing. Masayo Ishigure, a master of Japanese koto, paid homage to the signature blossom of the season with a composition entitled “Cherry Blossoms.” Kristin Schleiter, the Director of Outdoor Gardens at the New York Botanical Garden, spoke about Tulipmania in 17th century Europe. Jimmy Roberts played and sang some of the popular songs about spring. All in homage to this glorious season. There was a Bonnet and Boutonnière Contest for which the ladies were invited to design their bonnets and the gentlemen their boutonnières. Jacobson, Jean Shafiroff, and with special tribute to Paul Levine. The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS) celebrated its 2013 Spring Benefit honoring Seymour R. Askin, JBFCS Honorary Chair of the Board, Jerold D. Jacobson, Proskauer, Partner, Jean Shafiroff, JBFCS Board Member and Paul Levine, JBFCS Executive VP & CEO at New York City’s Plaza Hotel. Melissa Russo, WNBC news anchor, served as master of ceremonies. The evening began with a flourish, as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the cocktail hour to address the crowd and thank JBFCS, noting that “you can’t do it alone” and that the work of JBFCS is a necessity for the city to help its residents in need. At the conclusion of the cocktail hour, the attendees moved upstairs where master of ceremonies Melissa Russo introduced Tony Mann, the President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Mann announced the news to the 375 attendees that $1.3 million dollars had been raised for the organization. After Fred Yerman blessed the bread, Paul Levine, Executive Vice President of JBFCS, was introduced by John Herrmann, the former President of the Board of JBFCS. Outgoing VP and CEO Levine reflected upon his time with JBFCS and concluded by thanking everyone involved with the organization and the leadership under which he served. Chair of the Board Jean Troubh introduced honoree Seymour R. Askin, Jr. who outlined his detailed past with Big Brothers, the Jewish Board of Guardians, and JBFCS, working with those in need. He said his mother taught him that “people who are able to live well have an obligation to pay it back in some way.” Jerald D. Jacobson, the next to be honored, spoke about his four decades spent as counsel for JBFCS and the experience of working with four generations of leadership in the organization. Jean Shafiroff, the final honoree of the evening, was introduced by Joyce Cowin. Jean, in attendance with her husband Martin and daughter Elizabeth, kept her address brief, noting with genuine modesty that the actual heroes are the staff, the volunteers, and the thousands of individuals that JBFCS helps and houses. The $1.3 million raised will benefit JBFCS’ 175 community-based programs, residential facilities, and day-treatment centers that annually serve more than 55,000 New Yorkers-in-need of all faiths, races, and cultures. Scully, President of Scully & Scully celebrated The Fund for Park Avenue and the 2013 Park Avenue Tulips Not even a few April showers could dampen the spirits of the crowd that gathered last Thursday evening at Scully & Scully to celebrate the blooming of Park Avenue’s tulips. Each spring Michael Scully, President of Scully & Scully, hosts a reception at his chic Park Avenue shop to coincide with this eagerly anticipated spring ritual. The tulips, along with all of the planting and maintenance that takes place on the Park Avenue malls, is made possible by the annual contributions from the community to The Fund for Park Avenue. Stepping into Scully & Scully is like being welcomed into the beautifully decorated home of a dear friend. Michael Scully and Fund for Park Avenue President, Barbara McLaughlin, greeted guests as they arrived. Music from Alex Donner Orchestras filled the rooms, home-made hors d’oeuvres were passed by members of the Scully & Scully team, bowls of Eleni’s red tulip cookies were there for the taking and real red tulips were in vases throughout the store. The afternoon featured a keynote address by child advocate Elizabeth Smart. The kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. This traumatic experience led Elizabeth to create her own foundation that has allowed her to become an influential advocate for change related to child safety. Elizabeth’s compelling story continues to inspire children who have gone through similar experiences to not give up and know that there is life after tragic events. Dr. Mary Pulido, Executive Director of the NYSPCC, spoke about the mission of the NYSPCC, and the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Elizabeth Mayhew andValesca Guerrand-Hermes served as event co-chairs. The afternoon raised more than $150,000 for the agency’s Trauma Recovery Program. 250 guests were in attendance. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Luncheon program included important steps to recognize child abuse, take action if it is suspected, and most importantly, how to prevent it. Third Annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Roosevelt Island, April 13, 2013 : Saturday’s weather started out with a rain drop or two and changed to sunshine and blue skies. Over 4,500 people came out to enjoy a day of Japanese culture at Roosevelt Island’s Third Annual Cherry Blossom Festival, a street fair under the cherry trees in front of Goldwater Hospital, sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Residents Association in partnership with Four Freedoms Park Conservancy. The day began with opening remarks from Roosevelt Island resident Jim Luce acting as host for the events at the FDR Park. Mr Luce introduced the Japanese Ambassador Shigiyuki Hiroki , Roosevelt Island's Assembly Member Micah Kellner and RIRA's Lynn Shinozaki (who was the prime organizer of this event) and Junko Hasegawa followed by the NY Taiko Aiko Kai Japanese drummers. Former RIRA President Matt Katz extolling the virtues of Roosevelt Island, vendors sold Japanese food, beverages, and merchandise along the west promenade of Roosevelt Island leading to Four Freedoms Park. In the Park, traditional Japanese music was performed as well as a lively performance of Japanese drums by Taiko Aikokai, Koto & Shamisen (Japanese String) Ensemble, Japanese traditional dance “Ichifuji Kai, Iaido and Karate performance by RESOBOX. The evening honored the remarkable work by three curators whose exhibition and accompanying catalogue of the collection of 19th century French interior designer and ceramicist George Hoentschel. Exhibition curators Danielle Kisluk-Grosheide, Deborah L. Krohn, and Ulrich Leben were on hand to delight guests with privately led tours and shed light on this remarkable but little-known decorative arts collection. Gifted to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by American financier and avid collector J. Pierpoint Morgan in 1907, Hoentschel’s collection is primarily comprised of exquisite examples of medieval art and Eighteenth-century French pieces renowned for their beauty. The exhibition features sculptures, textiles, metalwork, furniture, paneling, and ceramics from this collection, which has been rarely viewed since the 1950s. The Perlman Music Program Cocktails, Dinner and a Chamber Music Concert in Palm Beach, March 16, 2013 : On Saturday, March 16, 2013, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) held its sixth annual concert and dinner at Kristy and Jim Clark’s beautiful Palm Beach home. Co-hosted by Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, and with over 150 Palm Beach arts lovers and philanthropists in attendance, the event honored Toby and Itzhak Perlman’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of classical music artists. This special annual event is made possible through the Clarks’ profound generosity and dedication to The Perlman Music Program. “Something really special is happening at Toby and Itzhak’s camp,” said Jim Clark. “To help establish the new Arts Center and to host this event each year is truly an honor for us.” The evening began with cocktails and champagne on the veranda, followed by a performance in the Clarks’ elegant living room featuring several outstanding PMP students and alumni. The concert included chamber music by Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms, presented by violinists Randall Goosby, Alice Ivy-Pemberton, Sean Lee, and Doori Na; violists Caitlin Lynch, Bella Markham, and Cong Wu; cellists Gabriel Beigel, Jia Kim, and SuJin Lee; and pianist Kwan Yi. The talented and poised young performers introduced each piece with a spirited tale, bringing each composer to life in their own words. After the exceptional concert, Jim Clark spoke about the transformational experience of hearing Toby and Itzhak’s young artists flourish over his and Kristy’s years of involvement. He urged the guests to join him and Kristy in the campaign to fully fund a beautiful new performing arts center on PMP’s Shelter Island, NY campus. Opened in 2012, the landmark Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center provides an essential year-round resource for PMP’s students and alumni. Jim announced that he and Kristy would personally match any of their guests’ donations towards the $3.5 million Clark Arts Center campaign, to a stirring round of applause. After Jim spoke, Toby Perlman thanked him and Kristy, Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, and PMP Board President, Morgan Stark, for helping PMP create the ideal environment to nurture gifted young musicians towards their full potential. Leon and his wife Tzili Charney also served as the evening’s Chairs. Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live fame lent his incredible talent as emcee. Journalist, author and public speaker, Susannah Cahalan was guest speaker. Sotheby’s was represented by auction chair, Roger Erickson and Jamie Ritchie, who pounded the gavel as auctioneer. Dr. Orrin Devinsky, Founder of FACES and Director of the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, welcomed Dr. Robert I. Dr. Devinsky kept the FACES community abreast of on-going significant research work, and spoke of Leon Charney’s remarkable achievements followed by a presentation of a special memento personally selected by Dr. Devinsky. Funds raised will provide for life-enhancing programs in cutting-edge research, clinical care, education and awareness programs, and community building events.

The event raised $736,000 in funds to support children’s health services, including psychosocial and emotional support services provided at the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (Hassenfeld Center) and the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Langone. Presented by the Committee for the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and KiDS of NYU Langone, the event attracted over 600 New York City professionals from finance, fashion, entertainment, and real estate, among other industries, who share a commitment to improving the lives of children who are treated at NYU Langone. "Food Chains" Eva Longoria introduces the documentary, Feb 21, 2013 : Eva Longoria Hosts Benefit for Her New Documentary “Food Chains” Exposes Exploitation in America’s Farm Labor Sector Last Thursday evening, acclaimed actress and philanthropist Eva Longoria hosted an intimate gathering of film enthusiasts and human rights activists at the stately Park Avenue home of Craig and Deborah Cogut in support of her upcoming film, Food Chains. This documentary on farm labor in the United States stars a bevy of noted advocates including Eric Schlosser, Dolores Huerta, Kerry Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The son of Deborah and Craig Cogut, Jonathan, who is also a senior at Brown, served as an Associate Producer on this project. Friends, new and old, braved the blustery New York winter weather to learn about the suffering of the millions of people at the core of our agricultural system, namely the farmworkers, and to donate toward the completion of this film. “Farmworkers are amongst the most poorly paid and most poorly treated workers in this country,” shared Ms. Longoria. “They provide an abundance of food to our tables yet many go to bed hungry at night. This is not an immigration issue. This is a human rights issue.” The film’s director, Sanjay Rawal, added “With all the interest in food right now, we need to have more interest in the hands that pick our food.” Ms. Longoria’s film Food Chains exposes the current and historic exploitation of farmworkers including stunning revelations that currently thousands of laborers in our nation’s fields are estimated to be held in bondage as modern-day slaves. The film also exposes the forces behind these abuses as well as the pathway to change. The film is currently in post-production with an expected 2013 release date. “We are connected to each one of these workers through every bite of food we take,” remarked Ms. Longoria. Farmworkers profiled in the film came from as far away as Florida to participate in the evening. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, some of the most heralded farm laborers in the country and winners of the RFK Human Rights Award, told the audience that just a penny more per pound would take Florida’s tomato pickers out of abject poverty. The evening marked perhaps the first time that this topic was discussed at an event on Park Avenue since the days of the United Farmworker grape boycotts. Guests left inspired, motivated and encouraged that a solution to end the suffering of millions within our borders was possible. The mission of Heat & Soul is to provide aid to segments of the New York City community who are living in marginalized situations. The Fund acts as the principal source of funding, support and advice for its selected grantees, including such programs as Girl Scout Troops in East Harlem, Health Advocates for Older People, Everybody Wins! and Fast Break Mobile Mental Health Clinic for Children. Gail McGovern, President and CEO of the American Red Cross was presented with the Forrest Church Award for Humanitarian Service by Carolyn Buck Luce in honor of her late husband, Rev. Dr. Forrest Church. The award is given to an individual who demonstrates a capacity for moral courage and selflessness while working towards the betterment of our world. Former recipients include Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of the international health and social justice organization Partners In Health; former U.S. President Bill Clinton; Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and the Hon. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York. In the spirit of having fun while doing good work, the event featured great food and drinks from Sant Ambroeus Special Events, and raised money through both Live and Silent Auctions featuring Judith Ripka Jewelry, with an online auction managed by CharityBuzz.com, the leader in online auctions committed to helping nonprofits around the world raise funds with a creative, innovative approach to on-line bidding. Fund for Armenian Relief--The Pinajian Discovery, Feb 13, 2013 : On Wednesday evening Lost and Found: The Pinajian Discovery, an exhibition of 50 paintings by the late abstract artist Arthur Pinajian had its New York debut with a benefit preview for the Fund for Armenian Relief at the Antiquorum Gallery. The genesis of this exhibition is a fascinating one, and starts when Lawrence E. Joseph, the best-selling author of “Apocolypse 2012” and Thomas Schultz, were looking for house in Bellport, Long Island, and came upon a charming cottage where Pinajian’s once resided with his sister. While walking the property he entered the garage and lo and behold there were thousands of paintings, sketches, drawings, tucked into every nook and cranny and piled from floor to ceiling. Pinajiian had instructed his sister to destroy everything, but a cousin intervened and halted the dump truck as it was pulling into the driveway. Mr. Joseph contacted Professor William Innes Homer, then dean of American art historians, who in turn reached out to Peter Hastings Falk, another prominent art historian, whose website RediscoverdMasters.com is devoted to the work of late-career and deceased artists whose work may have been overlooked. He and his team came to the conclusion that Pinajian is indeed an important artist on the caliber of some of the great abstract expressionists of our time. The screening showcased the talents of leading players from 30 American orchestras who gathered together in New York last August to record eight high-definition programs for national broadcast this year. Sixth Annual Hearst Design's Vision, Jan 29, 2013 : On January 29, 2013 Hearst Magazines had its sixth annual Designer Visions, a showcase of the best in interior design talent and trends at 250 WestStreet, El Ad Group’s residential property in Tribeca. Hearst Design Group publications Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Veranda partnered with top interior designers to create three exquisite apartments in the luxury building, each residence reflecting the magazines’ unique style and point of view. The designers for this year’s Designer Visions were: Matthew Patrick Smyth for Elle Decor David Rockwell forHouse Beautiful; and Antony Todd for Veranda. The three residences will be serving as movie sets for six short films (two in each apartment) that have been made as part of Designer Visions’ collaboration with 48 Hour Film Project, an organization whose mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. The six films will be screened, followed by an exclusive party at the Designer Visions residences. A panel of members of the film and advertising communities will judge the entries and select, respectively, the best film and the film that best integrates participating sponsors including Jenn-Air and Benjamin Moore. Following the gala opening, the Designer Visions residences will host a series of exclusive events through the end of the year. 4th Charity Wine Auction for the Perlman Music Program, Jan 23, 2013 : photos by www.anniewatt.com On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) held its Fourth Charity Wine Auction at per se. This year’s event was co-chaired by Paul Gridley, Robert F. Hudson, Itzhak Perlman, Joanna S. Rose, George P. Sape, Esq., Michael Troise, Thomas Tuft, The Honorable Ronald N. Weiser, and William Lie Zeckendorf. Proceeds from the event benefitted the mission of PMP, founded 19 years ago by Toby Perlman, which offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent. Guests were greeted with champagne and canapés and then enjoyed a festive dinner, which consisted of a six-course seasonal tasting menu paired with exceptional wines, including bottles from Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Heitz Cellars and Chateau d’Yquem, and a 1996 Pichon Lalande, in the intimate private dining room at per se. Michael Troise, retired Auction Director for Christie’s Fine and Rare Wines Department, auctioned rare and extraordinary vintages from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa Valley, and one-of-a-kind dining, travel and cultural experiences – including a private dinner with Maestros Itzhak Perlman and Alan Gilbert, both of whom were in attendance. A violin performance by PMP alumni of a rousing virtuoso rendition of ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ received a standing ovation. Auction items were generously donated by individuals and companies from around the world, with special thanks to Christie’s, Acker Merrall & Condit, and Domaine Wine Storage. Budapest Festival Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall, Jan 20, 2013 : Janaury. 20, 2013 the world renowned Budapest Festival Orchestra returned to Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall for a Great Performers series concert on Sunday, January 20 at 3pm. The BFO have long been a highlight of the concert season, with the orchestra playing to sold out houses. The BFO performed Shostakovich: Jazz Suite; Bernstein: Serenade; Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 2 under the baton of Iván Fischer, conductor, joined by Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman, who has entranced European audiences with her passionate, thoughtful playing. Following the concert, the Friends of the Budapest Festival Orchestra hosted a gala and toasted Maestro Fischer’s birthday on the Promenade of Avery Fisher Hall. Board members: Daisy M. Archaeology Zone: Discovering Treasures from Playgrounds to Palaces at the Jewish Museum, Jan 13, 2013 : Archaeology Zone: Discovering Treasures from Playgrounds to Palaces is inspired by the Museum's renowned collection of extraordinary art and artifacts. Children will be invited to discover the world of archaeology through a fascinating in-depth study of art and artifacts from ancient times to the present day. They will explore the methods employed by archaeologists after an excavation occurs, specifically, how they analyze the objects that have been unearthed. The exhibition will illuminate how the analysis of artifacts teaches us about the development of art and cultures over time, while establishing connections to objects and ideas in our daily lives. Assuming the role of the archaeologist, children will embark on an exciting adventure where they will encounter unusual objects and determine how and why they were made. Children will piece together two larger-than-life vessels, examine replicas through weighing and magnifying, interpret symbols in a colorful mosaic, create works of art inspired by unique objects in the Museum's collection, dress in costumes from long ago, and much more.
